Specialist Grooming Support
Helping dogs build confidence with the grooming process.
Specialist Grooming Support is a personalised behaviour modification programme designed for dogs who find the grooming process difficult, overwhelming or stressful. Every dog is different, which is why each programme is tailored to their individual needs. Using kind, reward-based techniques and working at your dog's pace, we'll gradually help your dog build trust, confidence and positive associations with grooming. The goal isn't simply to complete a groom—it's to help your dog feel safer, more relaxed and increasingly comfortable with grooming over time.
This service is separate from our Dog Wash appointments and is designed specifically for dogs who find the grooming process difficult, overwhelming or stressful.
Every dog experiences grooming differently. Some dogs may have had a previous negative experience, while others simply find the grooming environment unfamiliar or overwhelming. For some, the source of their worry may be more obvious, such as the sound of a dryer, standing in the bath, being handled in certain ways, or being separated from their owner in an unfamiliar environment. For others, the cause may be less clear, and we may never know exactly why they feel the way they do.
What's important is understanding how your dog feels today and working with them at their own pace to help them build trust, confidence and positive associations with grooming.
Every journey begins with a free initial consultation, giving me the opportunity to meet you and your dog, discuss their grooming history (where known), understand their individual needs and carry out an initial assessment. From there, we'll create a personalised behaviour modification plan tailored specifically to your dog.
Using kind, reward-based techniques and working at your dog's own pace, we'll gradually help them develop positive associations with grooming. The goal isn't simply to complete a groom—it's to help your dog feel safer, more relaxed and increasingly comfortable with the grooming process over time.

Success isn't measured by completing a groom in one appointment, but by helping your dog feel more confident than they did before.
Meet Wendy - Your Dogs Groomer
Hi, I'm Wendy, owner of It's a Dog's Life St Helens. I qualified as an OCN Level 3 Dog Groomer in May 2022 and I'm also an IMDT-qualified Dog Trainer and ISCP Level 5 Canine Behaviourist. Bringing these qualifications together allows me to support dogs who need a more personalised approach to grooming.
Throughout my career, I've worked with dogs of all breeds, sizes, temperaments and needs, including many who were nervous, anxious or reactive. Alongside my professional work, and our family dogs, my family and I have also fostered dogs from a wide range of backgrounds, helping them build confidence and prepare for life with their forever families.
I believe every dog deserves to feel safe, understood and supported. My role isn't to rush the grooming process or expect your dog to cope before they're ready. It's my job to work with your dog at their own pace, building trust through patience, understanding and positive experiences, so that grooming becomes something they feel more comfortable with over time.
Your Dog's Journey
Every journey begins with a free initial consultation here at It's A Dog's Life St Helens, giving me the opportunity to meet you and your dog, discuss their grooming history (where known), understand their individual needs and carry out an initial assessment.
From there, we'll create a personalised behaviour modification plan based on your dog's confidence levels, individual needs and how they respond to different aspects of the grooming process. Every dog is different, so there is no one-size-fits-all approach.
For some dogs, this may mean starting with short, positive visits to the salon, allowing them to become familiar with the sights, sounds and smells of the grooming environment. For others, it may involve introducing grooming equipment gradually, building confidence with handling, or simply taking the time to develop trust and positive associations before any grooming takes place.
Throughout every session, your dog's emotional wellbeing comes first. Frequent breaks will be given whenever needed, and there will never be any pressure to achieve a full groom in a single appointment. Depending on your dog's individual needs, a session may involve a full groom, part of a groom, or simply time spent building confidence and creating positive experiences. Every step of your dog's journey will be discussed and agreed with you.
To provide the calmest possible environment, the indoor private hire facility is closed to other users during these appointments, allowing me to give your dog my full attention. When needed, we can also make use of the play area as a quiet space for your dog to relax, decompress and take breaks throughout their session.
